The Cymbidium orchid was discovered in 1800 by a botanist from Sweden. In nature, the presented plant species is found in Thailand, Burma, China and Australia. It grows on trees, rocks and land. Today, about 60 species of this plant are known, preferring various climatic conditions - from fairly severe Himalayan to loyal tropical.

Plant features

Cymbidium orchids have oval pseudobulbs that are located tightly to each other, which can be seen by looking at them in the photo. Their height can vary from 1 to 15 centimeters. On the bases of pseudobulbs are peduncles hanging or direct type. The minimum number of flowers on the peduncle is one. Shades of petals can be varied, the diameter of the flower is up to 13 centimeters.

How to care for Cymbidium

Caring for Mix orchid and other species does not require special knowledge. The plant should be located on a well-lit window sill, but at noon it is better to shade Cymbidium with a light curtain. The content of this type of orchid at home also involves providing cool air in the room: the plants do not tolerate heat, at too high a temperature their leaves turn black and fall off.

The humidity of the orchid is required within 60%, so in the summer you should spray the flower up to three times a day. It will be much easier to take care of Cymbidium if you put a pot with a plant on a pallet filled with wet expanded clay or pebbles.

How is the transplant performed?

Caring for an orchid involves carrying out a transplant after the roots of the plant fill the entire pot. Usually, a transplant is carried out once every few years, when young shoots are stretched to 5 centimeters. How to carry out the process correctly?

  • It is necessary to correctly select the substrate. Soil can be purchased in specialized stores or made independently. It is based on pine bark, fern roots and moss, charcoal and horse manure are added. What to do next? Mix the components and pour into the pot on the drainage layer made of expanded clay. The substrate layer should be no more than 3 centimeters.
  • You can transplant Cymbidium with a lump of land. A substrate is poured from above so that the pseudobulbs are located above the soil level.
  • If the roots were not damaged during the transplant, watering can be carried out. If you got rid of rotten roots, you should not water the plant. The transplanted plant is moved to partial shade, so that it quickly gets used to the new environment.

Orchid Cymbidium: home care

How is watering carried out and is feeding necessary?

It is necessary to water the orchid during the growth period actively, but it is important that the water does not stagnate in the roots, otherwise they will begin to rot. For the same reason, the leaves of the plant turn black. If watering is insufficient, the bulbs wrinkle and the leaves fall off.

Closer to winter when growing at home, watering should be reduced, and the substrate should be moistened every 2 weeks.

Every third watering at home is supported by top dressing, only this way bulbs will develop constantly. Useful substances are added to the already moistened soil. Fertilizers such as "Rainbow", Kemira Suite, "Ideal". The pictures that are placed on the packaging clearly show how to properly dilute the product. Usually it is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 1. In the middle of summer, nitrogen fertilizing should not be done so often, and potassium, on the contrary, is recommended to be increased.

How to reproduce

Cymbidium is propagated at home vegetatively - by dividing the bush. How it looks can be seen in the photo in special floriculture manuals, pictures will clearly show how the process is going.

The procedure should be carried out during plant transplantation. After you get the orchid out of the pot, you will see a tangle of tangled roots, while at the bottom they will be dry and gray. Dry roots should be carefully removed, and then you need to cut the plant so that on each part there are bulbs and roots.

Places of cuts are processed with coal, and delenki are seated in pots with a substrate. It is important to water the transplanted plants in a timely manner, until they form new leaves and bulbs, which will serve as a signal that the orchid has taken root.

How to make an orchid blossom

In order for the leaves, flowers and bulbs of the orchid to always be in order, it is necessary to provide the plant with a difference in day and night temperature of 5-10 degrees for a couple of months. Why is this so important? In fact, the temperature difference stimulates the formation of buds!

How to make Cymbidium Mini or a classic plant variety bloom? Provide him with good ventilation, but not a draft. In the spring, the orchid moves to a glazed loggia, and then to the street. When laying flower stalks, it is recommended to place it in a well-lit place. However, direct sunlight should not fall on the leaves so that the plant does not receive a burn.

Caring for Cymbidium involves additional treatment in the morning and evening. In winter it is recommended to carry out additional illumination from 8 to 20 hours with the help of special lamps.

It is equally important to ensure good watering in the summer, otherwise the bulbs will dry out. Overdrying the soil will cause the buds to fall off.

After lowering the temperature so that the bulbs do not freeze, the plants must be brought into the house. The temperature in the room during the day should be 20 degrees, at night - 15.

In winter, at home, an orchid must provide an ambient temperature of 14 degrees. Top dressing is limited to once a month. The cooler the room, the less often you should moisten the soil for flowers.

Orchids are so popular in our time that people are not only actively engaged in their cultivation, but also try to use the appearance of the flower for decorative purposes. For example, confectioners often use special metal cuttings, with which you can create flowers from mastic or chocolate to decorate confectionery. If the cutting is done efficiently, the sugar flower looks almost like a real one.
