Orchid is a rather capricious plant that requires careful care, so not every soil composition will be pleasant to her. What soil options should be chosen and why - read on.
What soil does orchid need? It must meet certain requirements:
- without the maintenance of garden land;
- able to keep phalaenopsis in an upright position;
- having a good throughput, retaining a minimum amount of moisture.
Question about soil composition
How to prepare the earth correctly? Firstly, there is no need to be afraid to conduct experiments, only this way you will find the composition that is optimal for the plant. The main criterion that everything is done correctly is the flowering of the phalaenopsis. However, sometimes it can be achieved in a vase without soil!
The following components are most often included in the soil for orchids:
- tree bark;
- expanded clay;
- coconut fiber;
- fern roots;
- sheet earth;
- Pine cones;
Why should the soil for orchids be so? The fact is that plants of the present species belong to the genus of epiphytes, which means they have “airy” roots. Using them in nature, phalaenopsis is attached to a donor plant or to a rock. The orchid receives nutrients in the natural environment from the air, watering is done by rain.
Basic cooking options
There are various ways to prepare the soil for further planting of phalaenopsis.
- Suitable soil can be composed of the following components: horse peat, leaf soil, pine needles, polystyrene foam, sphagnum moss. All components should be carefully steamed before mixing. In order to provide phalaenopsis with air, it is necessary to prepare good drainage, for this, beaten bricks and pieces of polystyrene are laid on the bottom of the pot.
- Phalaenopsis can be planted in soil made from bark of pine or spruce with the addition of the roots of moss and fern (they should be cut into small pieces). It is important to rinse the bark and root system of the fern before planting, and then steam it. Moss is used fresh. It is important to immerse it in water for a day. So you do yourself rid the moss of snails, ants and other insects that just float to the surface of the water. The soil composition for variegated orchids should include peat - 10% of the total volume.
How to prepare bark for planting Phalaenopsis orchids
Peat: what to take and where to get
Orchid planting stock often contains peat. It must be mounted and delivered in pieces. You can buy peat in specialized stores. The substrate components of the Gardens of Aurika show excellent performance.
Peat, as an acidic material, requires special treatment. To neutralize the increased acidity is quite simple if you add dolomite flour at the rate of 5 grams per liter. After mixing, the soil should be moistened and left for a day. Peat is typically added to the Auriki Gardens substrates for adult orchids.
Harvesting fallen leaves
To create the soil, you can use fallen leaves. Decaying, they become an excellent source of nutrition for the plant. Oak leaves are good for orchids, and beech foliage is an ideal option. You can also use the leaves of aspen, birch and other trees growing in central Russia. To the leaves is added the substrate "Gardens of Aurika", nutshell, mahogany shavings.
Why do we need charcoal
Charcoal, which is a good absorbent, should be added to the soil for orchids. You can buy it in a store or cook it yourself: just burn a birch log at the stake. Two-centimeter pieces of coal are taken for the substrate.
Cora: where to get and which one to choose
Which bark to choose? Best for phalaenopsis is birch, pine, oak and spruce bark. A good option is the larch bark.
Substrate "Gardens of Aurica" usually diluted with bark offered by specialty stores. However, it is easier to collect the bark for the plant yourself. It is worth remembering that you should not collect bark from a living tree - it contains a lot of tarry substances, although it looks more attractive in photos and in life.
It is not enough just to collect the bark for the plant, it still needs to be prepared. The collected material is cleaned of resin, mold, wood. Then it is treated thermally, boiling twice for 20 minutes with an interval of 2 days. Then the bark is dried, and in this form it can be stored for a long time.
Shop soil for orchids "Flower happiness" sold in two-liter packages. The mixture contains:

- larch bark;
- high peat;
Before planting the plants in Flower Happiness, it is recommended to add a little pine bark. It is also sold in flower shops. Orchids respond favorably to "Flower happiness", many flowers in the soil presented show rapid growth of peduncles, which is immediately noticeable in the photo.
The store soil for orchids, such as "Ambulance". Substrate of five-liter packages is realized. "Ambulance" is intended for transshipment, transplantation and propagation of plants. The content in the soil of the bark is optimal, the humidity is good.

Ground-free cultivation at home
Can an orchid live without soil? Maybe, but only if the roots of the flower are not used to being constantly in a humid environment. The bark and other components of the orchid are needed for the most part for support, but if you install skewers or something like that in the pot, the need for soil disappears. Watering in this case is carried out once every 7 days.
Located in a vase, an orchid can also do without soil. Over time, it becomes noticeable that it begins to hang, leaning on the edges of the container. If there is always enough water in the vase, there is no need for moss or other substrate.
How to transplant an orchid
An orchid can be planted in the ground or placed in a vessel without it. You can purchase the finished substrate or prepare it yourself: all the components required to create the soil can easily be found in the forest. In addition, in order for the flower to feel good, it is necessary to provide it with enough water and air.
