These bright red and crunchy apples are quite juicy and look appetizing not only in photographs, but also in the garden, on tree branches. Fruit ripening occurs in the early autumn.
It should be noted that the sweet flesh of the Red Delicious apples is quite often mealy to some extent. For this reason, these fruits are most often used for making snacks and a variety of fruit salads.
Grade description
By their natural characteristics, the apple trees of this variety are a mutation of the classic Delicious branch. The apple variety Delicious Red has been cultivated for over a century. The most popular it is in America. For the entire time of cultivation of apple trees of this variety in many countries, a significant amount of its various subspecies has been bred. New items contributed to the growing demand for Delicious Red in Europe.
Due to its unpretentiousness, the subspecies of the Delicious Red apple tree can be cultivated in almost any climatic conditions and on any soil. However, most amateur gardeners know that the variety prefers a dry climate with cold night and fairly warm day temperatures. The apple variety Delicious Red is ideal for cultivation in the suburbs.
Trees of this variety are medium-sized and look spectacular, especially during flowering. The crown of young plants has an oval or inverse pyramidal shape, which becomes rounded or wide rounded by the fruiting period and is formed from branches that are medium in thickness and have numerous different-aged gloves with ovaries.
The shoots of the tree are medium, with red-brown staining, severe pubescence, as well as a straight or slightly curved shape. The leaves have an average size, oblong-oval shape, a rounded base and a medium elongated apex. The foliage is colored green, shiny, and the edges of the leaves are serrate-toothed.
From the Delicious variety, apple trees are distinguished by the presence of red coloration of the lower part of the petioles, which reaches the middle part of the leaves along the veins. The rates of early maturity are quite average, and the yield completely depends on the cultivation conditions and competent care of fruit plants.
The undeniable advantage of the variety is the high rates of marketable and consumer qualities of the collected fruits. The disadvantages are low adaptability to cultivation conditions, as well as the likelihood of damage to apples during storage by bitter spotting.
Using Delicious Red, the Crimean Experimental Gardening Station succeeded in developing varieties such as Winter Beauty, as well as Flames of Elbrus and Prikubanskoye, which are currently included in the State Register.
Nutritional Value of a Variety
Delicious Red fruits compare favorably with many other apple varieties by the presence of a very intense and spectacular dark red blush that is spread across the entire surface of the fruit. In addition, a distinctive feature of the variety is the presence of redness on the stalks of apples, which is formed on the sunny side.
Standard indicators of the chemical composition of fruits harvested in the southern regions are as follows:
- the amount of solids on average is about 15.5%;
- total sugar values can vary from 9.5 to 11.8%;
- total acid values can vary from 0.38 to 0.65%;
- the content of ascorbic acid in fruits can range from 5.5 to 6.5 milligrams per 100 grams of pulp;
- the content of P-active substances does not exceed 130 milligrams per hundred grams of pulp.
Red Delicious apples not only have excellent external characteristics, but also are useful. However, it should be borne in mind that red fruits are not recommended for young children, as they are to some extent an allergen.
Red Delicious Apple Trees: Feature
Planting and Care Rules
Trees of this variety begin fruiting in the second or third year after budding on weak rootstocks.
The first few years, fairly regular fruiting is observed. With age, fruiting stability may vary depending on cultivation technology and weather conditions. Garden plantings of the Red Delicious variety have relative frost resistance. Weak drought tolerance of the variety can provoke chopping of apples and a decrease in their quality with insufficient watering. When cultivated in areas with characteristically high humidity indicators, tree mildew damage is very often observed.
In areas of considerable size, planting of an apple tree grafted onto seed or overgrown stock is allowed. Such fruit trees are planted in a 5 x 5 meter pattern. In small garden areas, it is advisable to give preference to medium-tall seedlings on semi-dwarf and dwarf rootstocks. On semi-dwarf rootstocks, seedlings are planted in accordance with a 4 x 4 meter pattern. For dwarf rootstocks, it is possible to land according to the 3 x 3 meter pattern.
The planting time for the Delicious Red apple tree depends on the climatic conditions and the characteristics of the cultivated area. In the autumn period, starting from the last decade of September and ending a month before the severe frosts, it is recommended to plant planting material of fruit trees in the southern regions, as well as in the regions of the middle zone, characterized by the preservation of a fairly high level of snow cover in the winter.
In northern regions with snowy and frosty winters, planting of apple trees on dwarf rootstocks or trees that have a columnar shape is better to postpone until spring. The spring planting option is highly recommended if you need to plant seedlings in areas with a close occurrence of groundwater. Landing holes for the apple tree, it is advisable to prepare a month before planting. This allows the fertilizer to be partially decomposed and the soil to settle densely.
Harvesting and storage
The main harvest of ripened fruits of this variety falls on the last days of September. Subject to the collection technology, the shelf life of the fruit is quite long. Delicious Red apples can be stored until February in ordinary household refrigerators. When using special equipment, namely chambers with controlled atmospheric indicators, apple storage can be extended until next summer. It should be remembered that during storage, the fruit is often damaged by a disease such as bitter spotting.
