If a small country pool does not suit you anymore, and you decide to build a capital one from concrete, then you will need to fulfill many relevant requirements that ensure the reliability of the structure and its correct functionality in future use. One of the stages of the construction of a concrete pool is waterproofing.
Not all of us understand well what a concrete bowl is, what kind of pillow and piping it needs, how installation or pouring takes place, and why it needs waterproofing. Therefore, we will try to consider our topic in more detail.
Why do you need waterproofing pools
Initially, one should correctly understand the functional features of waterproofing, which can be of an external or internal type. External is necessary to protect the structure from the effects of groundwater and various elements contained in them. The internal task is to protect the concrete structure from water, but already from the inside.
The main pool is a rather complex construction with a very large weight of water inside, and, accordingly, with great pressure on the walls. Picking water into the pool and releasing it, we act on the entire structure. Possible vibrations during pool use, temperature changes and other factors also apply. Accordingly, the concrete bowl takes a hit and after a while problems arise. It can be chips and cracks, small fractures, which under constant influence progress and lead to negative consequences.
Waterproofing, no matter how it is performed, is not a protection against improper execution of the bowl and its destruction, it can only prevent moisture from penetrating through poor-quality and damaged materials. Therefore, moisture insulation must be done on time, during construction or before its operation. Otherwise, if the size of cracks and defects reaches a size of more than 3 mm, it will no longer help, and repair will be ineffective. This, accordingly, will lead to the loss of the pool or short-term use of its miserable and defective likeness.
Methods of waterproofing pools
The process is the creation of a special protective layer that prevents the penetration of water from the outside of the entire structure and from inside it. To date, two methods of waterproofing are known, which we have already mentioned above:
- Outdoor - This is the introduction into concrete of mineral and plasticizing additives during construction, or already during the repair of the pool. They significantly increase water resistance and mechanical strength. It is also possible to bookmark special profiles of expanding rubber;
- Inner. This treatment of the inside of the structure is necessary so that water from the concrete bowl does not enter the composition of the material and does not spoil the structure. Today, the most high-quality, convenient and effective is considered reinforced coating waterproofing. It is laid on the surface of the pool before it is finished.
Types and features of waterproofing
High-quality waterproofing should be flexible, as the bowl may undergo some deformation due to high pressure. But do not focus on elasticity, ideally, waterproofing should be strong, durable, resistant to external influences, with a high adhesion rate.
Experts say that an important feature of quality work is the ability to create a solid layer, that is, monolithic and seamless.
Rolled waterproofing of pools
This type is used for external work, since it does not have the ability to firmly fasten to the base and the lining itself. Such moisture insulation is possible inside the bowl only if a PVC membrane is used as a coating. Otherwise, it is used as an external one. Initially, the material is laid out on the surface of the soil, which is already prepared for the production of the base. Further, all seams are joined by welding, the edges rise and, subsequently, are welded to the waterproofing material of the walls.
Coating waterproofing of pools
Laying this type of insulation occurs only on a carefully prepared surface of the inner part of the pool. The most commonly used cement-polymer waterproofing. It can be one-component and two-component. Experts do not see the fundamental difference between them, but are more likely to use just two-component compounds.
Materials for waterproofing pools
Moisture insulation of pools with your own hands or with the help of qualified specialists is possible, but this is only a workflow. And we need to know the list of materials used for this, in order to know the positive and negative sides, as well as to make an independent assessment.
During work with the insulating layer, which is laid during the construction or repair of the pool, it is necessary to take the materials themselves seriously. In particular, pay attention to rubber bands and reinforcing polymer mesh, which are very important in pools with a large volume and with elevations.
Waterproof solutions are applied to the inside of the pool, which are initially pasty. Drying, the compositions acquire the necessary waterproof properties. Judging the quality of these materials can be based on pricing. More expensive and high-quality moisture insulation, in combination with a fiberglass mesh, gives a pretty good result - durability, water resistance, sufficient density and good elasticity. Coating waterproofing is considered the most reliable method that is used in the most critical jobs. It can be used even when repairing a pool when permissible cracks appeared in its basics.
Material in which there are many more disadvantages than advantages. The main one is fragility, while the only positive side is price. There are many different bituminous mastics on the market, but all of them are characterized by low adhesion to the materials used in the decoration of pools with ceramic tiles and mosaics. Moreover, bitumen requires a perfectly flat surface, as it quickly deteriorates due to bumps.
Compared to spreading, this method can be considered not very cost-effective. The main reasons for such conclusions are the high price or insufficient effect. But, such insulation is still used, and it increases the strength of the structure, and also prevents the appearance of cracks in concrete. This process is carried out using polymer or mineral compositions.
This substance is applied to the prepared surface of the pool bowl using the cold spraying method. The two-component emulsion has an enviable resistance to chemicals, including those used for water treatment, but also has some disadvantages, among which are fragility and incompatibility with many finishing materials.
This method is good in that the device of such membranes is fast enough, the material withstands a significant burst load, the cost is low and there is the possibility of minor repairs at any time. The disadvantages are the appearance of waterproofing, the difficulty of cleaning the material, restrictions on use, as well as increased sensitivity to mechanical stress.
Having considered the methods of waterproofing, features and some materials, you can draw conclusions and determine how the procedure will occur on your site.
